Helpful information

01

Choosing the right locksmith enquiry

Start with the problem rather than a product name. If you cannot get inside, the immediate question is access. If the door opens but the key sticks, the question is mechanical condition. If the lock works but keys are missing, the question is control over access. These situations can lead to different recommendations, even on the same door.

For a Craigieburn home, rental or business, describe which entry point is affected and whether it can still be secured. Mention any change that came before the problem: a new key, a loose handle, recent work on the door or a change of occupants. The service pages below explain what information is useful for each kind of enquiry.

02

Repair or replacement: what makes the difference?

A stiff key does not automatically mean the whole lock needs replacing. Door alignment, worn fixings, a damaged key or the cylinder itself may be involved. If the lock works with the door open but not when it is closed, include that observation in your enquiry; it helps distinguish a fit problem from an internal mechanism problem.

Replacement may be appropriate when parts are damaged, suitable repair components are unavailable or the existing lock does not meet the intended use. The door material, thickness, existing holes and position of the strike plate affect compatibility. Photos of the inside, outside and edge of the door are more informative than a close-up of the key alone. Do not send a photo that exposes the cuts on your key.

  • Explain whether access or securing the door is the immediate issue.
  • Identify the affected door and any visible brand or model.
  • Describe what happens with the key and handle.
  • Ask about compatible options and the basis of a quote before agreeing to work.

Planning enquiries for homes, rentals and business premises

For a home, consider who needs access and how the door is used from the inside. For a rental, explain your role as tenant, owner or property manager and check any required permissions before requesting a change. For a shop or office, identify the entry used by staff, any shared access arrangements and whether the work would affect normal operations.
