Lockout Assistance

Help getting back into a home or business when you cannot get in.

01

The problem

Keys locked inside, lost on the way home, or a lock that will not open with the right key — being stuck outside is stressful and needs a calm, practical response.

02

When you might need it

  • —Keys left inside the property
  • —Key snapped or stuck in the lock
  • —Lock will not open with the correct key

03

What to tell us

  • —Your exact location
  • —Which door and type of lock
  • —Whether anyone is inside or at risk

04

What to expect

Call during opening hours (7:00 AM–11:00 PM). We will ask a few questions about the door and lock and talk you through the next step.

05

Worth knowing

You may be asked to show you are entitled to access the property. If anyone is in danger, contact emergency services first.

More about this service

01

Explain the access problem before choosing a solution

Being locked out can mean keys left inside, a key that no longer operates the cylinder or a latch that will not retract. Tell the business which of these best describes the situation. Mention whether the door is an entry door, security screen or another access point, and whether another authorised entry is available.

A telephone enquiry should establish the location, the door involved and the immediate circumstances. Do not assume that one method works for every door or that access can always be restored without changing components. The suitable approach depends on the hardware and its condition.

  • Stay in a safe place while discussing the next step.
  • Do not force a key or damage the door attempting entry.
  • Be ready to explain your authority to access the property.
  • Ask about availability and how any charge will be determined.

02

After access: deal with the reason it happened

If keys were simply left inside, the follow-up concern may be day-to-day access arrangements. If the lock stopped working, discuss its condition rather than relying on repeated jiggling or force. A damaged cylinder or latch may need attention after the immediate problem is addressed.

If keys are missing, think separately about who might possess them. Restoring access does not automatically remove the ability of an old key to open the door. Explain that concern and discuss compatible options rather than assuming a particular change is necessary.
