Contemporary timber front door with brushed nickel lever handle on a white brick home

A.01 — The entry

Inside the lock

Five pins. One line. That's the difference between locked and open.

Most door locks use a pin-tumbler cylinder. The right key lifts every pin to the shear line so the plug can turn. When pins wear, stick or break, the key stops working properly — slide the key and see for yourself.

SHEAR LINE

Pins misaligned — the cylinder stays locked. Worn pins cause exactly this.

Detail 01 / The Lock

When the lock itself is the problem

A lock is a mechanical assembly of springs, pins and moving parts. Wear, dirt, damage or forcing can stop it turning smoothly.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Key turns stiffly or only part-way
  • Lock feels gritty or loose
  • Visible damage after an attempted entry

Sensible next step

Avoid forcing the key. Describe what the lock is doing so the problem can be assessed for repair or replacement.
